Zingerman’s Deli: This Institution IS Ann Arbor!

Zingerman’s deli is an institution in Ann Arbor.

I’m not just saying that because I’m from the area. I’m saying that because the restaurant/bakery/deli/ is so legendary that it was even featured in the movie {which I love, BTW}, the Five Year Engagement.

While my mom and I were out visiting rehab facilities, she asked if I’d go to Zingerman’s with her and have a sandwich. I was on the verge of ordering a burrito using the Chipotle app, when I felt bad for not supporting a {thriving} local business.

When we arrived and saw a line that spanned out the door, my heart sunk.

Then I saw that they had samples. My mom dutifully stood in line while I ate my way around the marketplace.

The line moved fairly quickly, and the crowd provided an opportunity to peruse the rather lengthy menu.

While my mom stood in the long line, I checked out the cheese area…

…and the deli (complete with lots of jamon serrano). There were a variety of “to go” picnic options ranging from picnics for one and picnics for a crowd.

Zingerman’s has a very comprehensive selection of vinegar and olive oils. My personal favorite was a vinegar called, “Kimberley Champagne” from California. I shamelessly ate a lot of samples.

The line moved fairly quickly, and I ordered “Kelly’s ménage a turkey” when we arrived at the counter. The sandwich had thinly sliced turkey, Zingerman Creamery’s Manchester cheese, oven roasted onions and Dijon mustard.

It was delish!

My mom had seen Oprah’s best friend, Gayle go on and on about the “Lisa C’s boisterous brisket” sandwich, and decided that if Gayle loved it, she too must sample it.

The sandwich has beef brisket simmered in BBQ sauce and is served with a side of baked beans.

My mom gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up!

Zingerman’s is well known for its bakery.

My dad enjoyed the blueberry cobbler. My mom and I loved the 24 carrot cake. We were less crazy about the hunka burnin love chocolate cake. And my mom ate her mini coconut cream pie with delight. We liked it, she loved it.

All told, we ate about $40.00 worth of desserts. It wasn’t hard to spend so much on desserts because the desserts weren’t cheap. Some slices of cake were $7.00 a slice!

My dad also had a vanilla malt.

In the name of journalism we felt compelled to sample these treats and report back to you.

The highlight of my visit came when I saw a chalked sign that highlighted a peanut butter special.

I inquired about the peanut butter and a friendly associate said, “come with me” and took me to the peanut butter display. When we arrived he asked if I was familiar with the brands on display. When I said, “no” he broke open three jars and introduced me to three delicious new peanut butters. It was my first time participating in a peanut butter tasting and it was delightful!

Koeze brand has been making peanut butter near Grand Rapids, Michigan since 1925. They use just two ingredients: peanuts and salt and the end result is delicious. I ended up buying two jars!

Zingerman’s is a popular institution because of its tasty, quality food.

A few closing thoughts:

There’s a fairly large patio space. If you visit in the summer, there’s plenty of space to sit down: they recently remodeled.

The restaurant also has a children’s menu, making it a great place to take your kids in pleasant weather.

As I mentioned, Zingerman’s bakery is famous {because the treats they create are delicious}. They offer a variety of cooking classes too.

The staff seem fun and passionate about food and I imagine them to be enthusiastic instructors.

The restaurant also hosts food tastings and discussions from time to time.

I’m even thinking about giving a class or two as a holiday present this year!

And lastly, Zingerman’s is a great place to ride your bike!

Like lots of environmentally friendly places, it’s a bike friendly restaurant. They even have a very impressive bike repair area too! Just in case your bike breaks down!!

Enjoy!!

I absolutely love peanut butter! It’s great that they have such a huge cheese counter. I am always looking for specialty cheeses and we don’t have very many options around here.
